This is a very good drill to practice. I still do it every once in a while and would advise it for everyone to at least try. Standing up correctly is a lot more important than you would think. Especially in competition.

we train this as part of our jiu jitsu warm ups, 1 modification i would suggest is to put all the weight on the left hand and right foot at step3 chamber the left foot back and fire a sidekick at your opponent's front shin or knee, it doesnt have to make contact just drive him back to create more space for you to stand up safely.

As we call here in Brazil...the famous "levantada técnica"....it is very effective, once, from position 3 you can attack also, low and high kicks to the knees or face. The best way to stand up without being hit.

I can't remember where I saw this recently, may have been a NHB hatman book. It's great stuff. thanks for sharing. I do like to keep my guarding hand closer to me than in picture 4, though it may have moved out for counter balance, I find it was good for me to practice this to the point where the hand extension isn't needed for balance. I would worry about the hand being pulled or manipulated.
